They Laughed When They Saw My Chest — But When I Started To Do This Exercise…
On a fine spring evening just a few years ago, I walked into a run-down gym in Detroit. It was one of those rough gyms that Apollo Creed took Rocky Balboa to in Rocky III, you know, where there are no fancy machines, just dumbbells, barbells, benches, a few heavy bags, and pullup bars… oh, and every guy there has the eye of the tiger.
I could feel those eyes on me as I walked in. I was new in the neighbourhood, and had no idea that this gym had special unwritten standards for people who train there. Basically, you had to be built like a tank. Needless to say, I was not built like a tank – more like a tin can that tanks use for target practice.
By that time I had gone a long way in my training. I had lost my man boobs and lost a hell of a lot of body fat. But my muscular development was still substandard. I could tell the guys in that gym had no respect for me. Heck, forget respect – they were outright laughing behind my back at my scrawny physique.
And then the most embarrassing thing then happened to me.
I was lifting a puny weight on the bench press, and I got stuck. I was really struggling with that final rep, and eventually had to call out for help. I'm pretty sure most of the guys in that gym would have enjoyed seeing me get crushed by that weight, but thankfully not everyone there was that sadistic. One guy did come and help me out. But I almost wish he hadn't.
He took the weight off me, made a joke about my puny chest and how weak I was, and proceded to do biceps curls with the weight. He seemed to go on and on, doing rep after rep, and everyone around me just started laughing.
That was one of the most embarassing days of my life, and it put me off going to gyms for a long time.
But little did I know at the time, that not going to the gym would be the best move I would ever make.
At home I had no access to a bench, so I had to find new exercises to help develop my chest. Eventually I came across this one exercise that made my chest muscles grow like crazy.
A year later I walked back into that same gym and almost all the same guys were still there. And not a single one of them recognized me. With my newfound physique, with a wide pec flare, thick upper pecs, and perfect midline separation, I was treated with respect.
It was like I had walked into an entirely different gym. The guys all treated me like one of their own. They made conversation with me, asked me where I was from, and we exchanged training ideas and techniques. Despite being built like tanks, these guys all had flaws in their chest development, and they asked me how I managed to get mine so wide and perfectly square-shaped, with thick upper chest development.
Everything about my chest was just right, and these seasoned bodybuilders wanted to know my secret.
Well they were all gobsmacked when they found out I hadn't done a single standard bench press in almost a year. They were even more gobsmacked when they found out I was that puny guy who got stuck lifting 80 lb on the bench press just a year ago.
So what was this new exercise that finally helped my chest muscles to grow and earned me respect and admiration in the meanest gym in Detroit?
Well it started out with this one exercise that is so different from the bench press, that few people would ever guess it was a chest exercise. In fact, most "experts" mistakenly believe this to be an exercise for the triceps.
This exercise works so well, because it stimulates those pec fibers along their lines of axis – something the bench press does NOT do. Another reason it works so much better than the bench press, is because it eliminates the involvement of the shoulders. The one biggest reason the bench press doesn't work for most people, is because there is more anterior deltoid involvement than there is chest involvement. The anterior deltoids being so small, means that the chest hardly gets a workout before the deltoids are too fatigued for you to carry on.
